Rarotonga Island
ONE of the popular misconceptions is that Rarotonga is its own island nation. In fact it is the capital island of the Cook Islands. There are 15 islands in total, with Rarotonga and Aitutaki being the two most famous. Rarotonga features the international airport and the island is circumnavigated by a coastal road with resorts, hotels, luxury villas and bungalows found along the white sand beach coastlines. Rarotonga is a popular holiday destination for those seeking an idyllic South Pacific vacation. It also makes an ideal stopover for travellers flying across the South Pacific ocean as it is approximately mid-way between USA and Australia and New Zealand.
Rarotonga Holiday Accommodation
There is a wide range of accommodation to match all budgets and vacation interests.
Things to do on Rarotonga: Around the coastline is an almost continuous white sand beach, trimmed by coconut palms. Rarotonga has a fringing coral reef that protects an inner lagoon ideal for swimming, snorkelling, sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Migrating whales can be spotted outside the reef (seasonal). Hiring a car or motor scooter is popular for exploring around the island or take the island bus that travels clockwise and anti-clockwise around the sealed coastal road. The main town is Avarua, a small but vibrant town with shops, banking, restaurants, crafts, black pearls and tourist office. It is also the location of Avatiu Harbour, which sees the arrival and departure of many vessels sailing and cruising the Cook Islands.
Facts about Rarotonga: The island is 32 km wide and roughly circular. A narrow coastal belt rises to stunning central highland peaks of around 650 metres high. Those on holiday on Rarotonga can enjoy hiking a beautiful cross-island trail roughly north-south. The International Airport is about 4 kilometres west of Avarua.
